    Become a Real Estate Salesperson

    To become a licensed real estate salesperson in New York State, you must complete the 75-hour Salesperson’s Qualifying Course covering real estate law, regulations and procedures. The course is offered by Long Island Board of Realtors and is available online. Highly recommended to go through Long Island Board of Realtors.

    Once you’ve completed and passed the qualifying course, you are eligible to take the New York State salesperson’s licensing exam. Licensing is done through the NYS Department of State, Division of Licensing.

      • When you receive notice that you’ve passed, interview with companies in your area to find one that’s a good fit.
      • Submit your application and fee to the NYS Department of State.

      Applicants must:

      • Be 18 years of age.
      • Not be more than four months in arrears on child support payments.
      • Provide information about the conviction for any crimes.
      • Name a sponsoring broker on the application.

    What are the Current Continuing Education Requirements? 

    All licensees must successfully complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education.  The education must include at least 2 hours of instruction pertaining to cultural competency, 2 hours of instruction on implicit bias, 2.5 hours on the subject of ethical business practices, at least 1 hour of recent legal matters, at least 3 hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property and at least 1 hour of instruction pertaining to the law of agency except in the case of the initial two-year licensing term for real estate salespersons, 2 hours of agency related instruction must be completed within the two-year period immediately preceding a renewal.
